We saw a herd of Bighorns on the shelf road between Cripple Creek and Canon City, Colorado. The lambs were scampering about as only lambs can. Some of the young males had their own bachelor herd and were hanging arond down on the road while the rest of the herd grazed the steep slopes. Maybe that is their version of going to the mall.

There is a herd of Black Angus cattle in a pasture near where I board my horses. I love watching the calves grow up, and I often stop to visit with them over the fence. The babies are a hilarious combination of curious and afraid. Eventually the curiousity wins out. I feel that I captured that curious but ready to bolt look in this young steer.

Here is another sheep painting. This ewe is wondering where her lamb has gone. I am always amazed that any sheep can tell which lamb belongs to her - they all look the same. I know it is by smell, but I think that is one of nature's miracles.

This is a lovely little pond fed by an irrigation ditch at an organic vegetable farm in rural Boulder County Colorado. Of course, there were Redwing Blackbirds, frogs, and plenty of bugs.

My farrier (horseshoer for the non-equine types) raises miniature donkeys. She has two adorable babies this year - a little Jenny called "Hillary" and a Jack called "Huey." I was out early today - on location and painting by 7 am. The morning light was absolutely luminous. We had rain last week, so the grass hay is looking very happy. This little farm used to have a large herd of horses, but it was sold recently and is sitting empty, the lush green grass ungrazed. My horse would consider this a criminal waste of photosynthesis.

This painting is symbolic for what is going on in my life right now. I just lost my job teaching painting and drawing at a private classical atelier. It was a very acrimonious parting of the ways, caused by the fact that the school is having serious financial difficulties and is unable to pay its faculty. I decided that rather than look for another teaching position I would focus exclusively on creating my own art and marketing it. This painting was done at sunrise on the first day of my new "job" - being free to paint full time is like a new dawn for me - who knows what the day will bring.

I may be jet-lagged, I may have gained 5 pounds, but I'm ready to paint! New Zealand was every bit as beautiful as I expected. Unfortunately, I did not get to paint at all. I was travelling with my family, and they were not sympathetic to my need to spend 2 to 3 hours in one spot to work on a painting. I did make lots of observational notes when possible and I took more photos than I will be able to paint in a lifetime. Keep a watch out - the Kiwi paintings are coming!

Watercolor - SOLD

I went to Cheyenne Wyoming today to see the Western Spirit Juried show. The work was very mixed, but there were some really beautiful paintings there. I especially liked the watercolors of Don Weller. He paints small shapes of color that describe the planes of his horses and people with a jewel-like but loose accuracy. His style is unique, very sophisticated.

Meet the Artist Night

I had an opportunity to meet the public and hang a one-woman show at the Colorado Academy of Art Gallery tonight. It is the first time I have seen my new encaustic work hanging as a group, framed and appearing under nice gallery lighting. I had a nice time talking to new people about my art and my classes, and I am already looking ahead to my wildlife and landscape show later this spring. I am posting my painting of a horse head. Society of Animal Artists Show

I have discovered a new place to study animal figures. It is called the Wildlife Experience, located in Parker Colorado. They have some very nice African lions, Leopards and Cheetahs, as well as a collection of Colorado large game animals.

The Society of Animal Artists show is in the main gallery until Feb. 18th, then there will be a show of work by Robert Bateman beginning March 1, 2008. I am especially looking forward to the upcomng show "The horse in fine art," opening June 7, 2008.

I have attached my silverpoint drawing of a couple of Dall sheep.

It was another snowy day in Colorado, so I headed off to the museum of natural history to draw animal skeletons. I drew a horse skeleton but I couldn't see it's feet, so I will have to finish it from books and memory. I also drew this pair of Mountain Goats.

I rather enjoyed drawing a lion yesterday, so in my obsessive-compulsive way I began to study lion anatomy. This is my drawing of a lion skeleton in front view. I plan to draw the lion's muscular structure tomorrow.

Lions in Boulder

Boulder Colorado nestles up to the foothills of the Rockies, and is surrounded by miles of open space land. For years the townspeople have been taxing themselves to buy up land and preserve it for wildlife refuge and back country recreation. There are bears and lions in them thar woods! A few days ago, a mountain lion jumped up on someone's deck (right in town) and grabbed one of their dogs. The poor owner thought the pups would be safe up there. You really do need to watch out around here...

Which brings me to this drawing I did of an African Lion. I grew up in Africa, but I never saw a lion except in game preserves. In fact, the only wildlife I ever saw in my village were locusts, lizards and birds. I think anything that had meat on it was put in a pot in the dead of night. (OK, maybe I am exaggerating.) Nevertheless, I think it is kind of cool that we have mountain lions around - it adds a little edge of excitement every time you head out for a walk.

Wind howling in the high country

The mountains of Colorado are getting slammed by some really cold wind and snow. I often wonder how the animals up there are able to stand it. The mountain goats, for example. I picture them huddled against the rocks, enduring it all stoically. They do have the most luxurious long white hair, so long it actually blows in the wind. Here is my sketch of a mountain goat.

This weekend I was at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. I walked around the yards, looking at Yaks, Bison, Longhorns, and Highland cattle. I watched the draft horse and mule events, and walked through the stables while the horses were being groomed and harnessed. What an incredible treat to be able to get so close to these wonderful creatures.

I have been drawing and painting animals for several months now, and I am ready to commit to producing this type of work for my daily paintings. Today I drew mule deer at the museum. I'm not sure how the delicate lines will show up in a thumbnail, but here goes...
